Hair Fall Causes, Treatment & Scalp Oil

Hair Fall Is Not a Hair Problem. It’s a Body Problem.

Switching shampoos won’t fix hair fall caused by stress, iron deficiency, or poor sleep. Most people are treating the symptom and ignoring the root cause.

Losing 50 to 100 strands per day is entirely normal. Hair grows in cycles — anagen (growth), catagen (transition), telogen (rest and shedding) — and on any given day, roughly 10% of your hair is in the shedding phase. What you notice on your pillow and in the drain is normal biological turnover.

But when shedding increases noticeably — a wider parting, more hair on the brush, a thinner feel to the scalp — something in the body has shifted. And the answer is almost never the shampoo.

The Four Most Common Causes of Hair Fall

1. Iron Deficiency

Iron deficiency is the leading nutritional cause of hair fall in Indian women, especially in the reproductive years. Iron is essential for haemoglobin production — the protein that carries oxygen to cells, including hair follicle cells. When iron (specifically serum ferritin) is low, hair follicles are among the first tissues deprioritised by the body.

Hair thins well before other symptoms show up. A simple blood test — serum ferritin — can confirm this. No oil, shampoo, or supplement addresses iron deficiency. Diet and, where needed, medical supplementation do.

2. Chronic Stress (Telogen Effluvium)

Elevated cortisol from chronic stress forces more hair follicles into the telogen (shedding) phase simultaneously. This condition is called telogen effluvium. It typically appears 2–3 months after the stressful event — which is why most people cannot connect the shedding to the trigger. The body prioritises survival over cosmetics. Hair is the first thing expendable.

The research on scalp massage and cortisol is consistent: 5 minutes of slow circular massage with warm oil measurably reduces cortisol levels. This is why the champi practice has always been done slowly, quietly, with presence. It is not incidental.

3. Poor Sleep

Hair growth is regulated by melatonin and growth hormone — both secreted primarily during deep sleep. Chronic sleep deprivation suppresses both. The hair growth cycle shortens, and strands shed faster than they are replaced. This is physiological. No topical product overrides it.

4. Hormonal Shifts

Post-pregnancy hair fall, thyroid disorders (check TSH levels), PCOS, and perimenopause are all documented and common causes of significant shedding in Indian women. These require medical attention — not a different oil. Identifying whether hair loss is hormonal in nature is the most important first step.

Where Scalp Oil Actually Fits In

Oil does not fix the systemic causes above. What it does — and does well, when used correctly — is support scalp health at the surface level. Warm oil massage improves microcirculation to the follicles. Cold-pressed oils, with their intact fatty acid profiles, nourish scalp tissue and maintain the lipid environment that healthy hair growth requires. They also reduce hygral fatigue — the repeated swelling and drying of the hair shaft — which prevents structural breakage independent of the growth cycle.

Think of the scalp as soil. Oil, massage, and nutrition are what healthy soil needs. But if there is a drought (iron deficiency), an environmental shock (chronic stress), or a systemic disruption (hormonal imbalance), the soil alone cannot compensate. Both the topical and the systemic work together — not instead of each other.

What to Actually Do About Hair Fall

Start with blood work. Serum ferritin, TSH (thyroid), and Vitamin D are the three most common deficiencies underlying hair fall in India. Then:

Address sleep as a specific physiological priority, not an abstract lifestyle goal.
Manage stress with consistent, measurable interventions — including massage, movement, and adequate rest.
Oil your scalp regularly, correctly, with oils suited to your hair type.

That is the complete picture.
