The word “shampoo” comes from the Hindi “champi,” the practice of head massage. The English borrowed the word in the 18th century, stripped out the oil, and kept the wash. What they left behind turns out to have been the most important part.
Champi, the traditional Indian scalp massage with oil, is referenced in the Charaka Samhita, one of the oldest surviving Ayurvedic texts. The text, written in the 1st century CE, describes daily head oiling as part of the dincharya (daily regimen), with specific benefits: prevention of premature greying, stronger roots, better sleep, and clarity of mind. For a long time, this was filed under “tradition.” Modern research is making it harder to dismiss.
What Science Now Confirms About Hair Oiling
A 2024 PubMed study surveying 1,200 participants across southern India found that consistent hair oiling practices were broadly associated with improved scalp health.
